Maceio in the northeast of Brazil is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. Maceio was not always a tourist hot spot. Built on the back of the Sugar industry Maceio was once a city of sugar plantations, colonialism and boasted a thriving port industry. The old town centre has retained much of the original colonial architecture and many of the old port warehouses have been converted into restaurants and bars.
