Maceio in the northeast of Brazil is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. The Capital of the state of Alagoas, Maceio attracts visitors in search of white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters all year round. The Atlantic Ocean offers great surfing in some areas whilst still offering calm waters in others, mix this with a tropical climate and an average annual temperature of 23°C and you have the perfect summer holiday destination. Two of the most popular and happening beach areas in Maceio are Pajussara and Ponta Verde. Make sure you don’t miss the bizarre fruit shaped public telephone boxes that line the streets.
Maceio was not always a tourist hot spot. Built on the back of the Sugar industry Maceio was once a city of sugar plantations, colonialism and boasted a thriving port industry. The old town centre has retained much of the original colonial architecture and many of the old port warehouses have been converted into restaurants and bars.
Maceio is a city that attracts a vast number of visitors from around the world but holds firm to its traditions of food and culture and therefore is a great place to experience traditional Brazilian cuisine and purchase traditional Brazilian arts and crafts.
