Belem travel guide

The city of Belem or Belem do Para as it is known to the Brazilians is located in the northern part of Brazil in the Guajara bay. This once small river port has become an industrial Brazilian workplace and financial centre of the region attracting people from all over the country in search of work.
Located near to the mouth of The Amazon, Belem’s banks are littered with lots of small islands and islets some inhabited, some wild and all open to visitors via a number of organised excursions.
Mango is the fruit of Belem and the streets are lined with an abundance of trees baring the fruit. The sheer number of Mango trees within the city of Belem has led to the city itself getting the nickname ‘city of Mango trees’
As a major colonial settlement, Belem has a numerous architectural places of interest with a strong influence and similarity with the architecture of 17th century Lisbon. Most of the historical buildings can be found in the Old town centre. A must during your stay is a peak at the amazing stained glass windows of the Basilica Nossia Senhora de Nazare.
A new tourist centre has recently been added to the city in the Harbour area offering restaurants, shops, bars and a starting point for a number of excursions out onto the islands.
